Dr. Pushpakaran Munuswamy MD FRCP

As an experienced consultant gastroenterologist, Dr. Munuswamy treats patients with acid reflux, swallowing problems, abdominal pain, bloating, bowel related symptoms, poor appetite, unexplained weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease  

He does endoscopic procedures to diagnose the gastrointestinal symptoms and to treat patients with acute gastro-intestinal bleeding and to remove colonic polyps.
 
Dr Pushpakaran Munuswamy trained in gastroenterology and liver diseases at King’s College Hospital, London, as part of the South East Thames rotation. 

Patient safety is central to Dr Munuswamy’s clinical practice, together with a gentle, kind, considerate and ‘listening’ approach to patient care. He takes time to discuss and involve patients in the decision process for managing their condition.

Procedures
Colonoscopy:

Dr. Munuswamy had done more than 3,000 colonosocpy procedures, completion rate of 98% (national target: 90%), adenomatous polyp detection rate, 40%, (national target: 20%)

Patient comfort scores were good with minimal discomfort and good patient feedback.

He has been accredited to be a bowel cancer screening practitioner, to do colonoscopy under national bowel cancer screening programme.

Gastroscopy:  

Dr. Munuswamy had done more than 4,000 gastroscopy procedures. He performs therapeutic procedures including, treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Innovation
He has a passion for innovation and had developed a new design of naso-gastric tube for feeding. This design was given a highly commended prize in the competition in East of England region. 

He believes that a proper design is essential to all the services and is capable of solving complex problems.
Research
Dr.Munuswamy actively participates in research on management of gastrointestinal conditions.
His project on leptospirosis was part of the MD degree.
He is actively involved in national trials including, CONSTRUCT for management of acute colitis patients and contributes to various liver related studies.
Additional roles
Chief clinical information officer; In his interest to improve productivity and efficiency in health care, Dr. Munuswamy had taken this role to provide vision and strategy for Information technology in healthcare in Basildon and Thurrock university hospital.​​
